Allison Bullock is at Home with Zwift Academy

ON September 23, 2016 by Kate Veronneau

Zwift Academy is a community of fun-loving, competitive women from all corners of the globe. They are moms, daughters, doctors, lawyers, caretakers, entrepreneurs, bosses, and more, who remarkably balance training with all of life’s responsibilities.

Each week, we’ll tell one rider’s story to uncover a little bit more of the motivations and personalities behind this inspiring group of women.

For Allison Bullock, wrenching on bikes meant less time in the saddle. Then Zwift Academy came along and offered her a ride. Here’s her story…

Why did you join Zwift Academy?

Zwift Academy came at a perfect time in my life. I was missing the local group rides due to work obligations. I saw ZA as a perfect opportunity to get back to riding with others.

How has the training impacted your life so far?

It has exceeded its original purpose by far! Not only has it given me group rides in the comfort of my home, but it has also given me a purpose in my training.

I am actually excited when my alarm clock goes off at 5am. I haven’t ever had structured training sessions or a coach, so this has been a real treat. It is really great to be a part of a women’s cycling community and to get to ride with so many talented women.

The ZA training and rides have become a large part of my life.

What do you do when you are not riding your bike?

I work at a local bike shop in Ridgeland, MS- The Bike Crossing. When I’m not selling, riding, or wrenching on bikes, I like to work in my yard, build small carpentry projects, and create art!

Do you have kids or pets? How do they feel about your Zwift station?

I had a 16 yr old tomcat named Monster. He passed away on August 18th at 16 yrs old. Monster was a special little dude with whom I shared almost half of my life. He knew me when I was overweight and a smoker at 21, and has watched me transform into the athlete and person that I am today. Some of our last days were spent in the trainer room together. Love you, Monster. Miss you, little buddy!

Cyclists have to replace a lot of calories. What is your favorite post-ride treat?

Muscle Milk, Chick-fil-A, and dark chocolate.

What’s one of your most memorable moments on a bike?

A little over a year ago, I was on one of my final solo training rides in preparation for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race in Colorado. Within the last 2 miles of my ride, I was hit by a car. I was very fortunate. I walked away with only a broken collarbone, road/car rash, and a cracked bike frame.

After a healing period of 4 weeks, I came back stronger than I had ever been with a greater love of cycling and a new bike!

Zwift has been a real godsend since this accident. I am still a little reluctant to ride outside alone.

Where has your bike taken you, physically and/or mentally?

When I ride, I am able to forget about everything. It allows me live in the moment and that is truly freeing.
